'The Female Orgasm' to excite student body
Multiple orgasms. The clitoris. Female ejaculation. Unless you need to get your eyes checked at the health center or are a rare … example of a college student with no curiosity about sex, you've probably noticed these topics on posters advertising "The Female Orgasm." And they're not for a special screening of an unreleased episode of "Sex and the City." "The Female Orgasm" is a lecture given by sex educators Dorian Solot and Marshall Miller, which they will present in Kresge Auditorium on Monday at 8 p.m. This hour-and-a-half talk will cover, in addition to the aforementioned topics, the subject of female orgasms in general. The lecturers will seek to illuminate the topic for women who aren't having them, students who are debating the existence of the G-spot, people who want to please their significant other, and anyone interested in sexuality and women's empowerment. Solot and Miller combine extensive knowledge with a playful, honest approach. The educators are a couple who claim not only to talk about sex but also to "once in a while…get lucky and actually have sex. With each other." They advertise their program as "sex education unlike like any you've had before." "The Female Orgasm" is a continuation of the couple's previous experience with Bowdoin. Last year, Heather Day '06, then co-chair of the Bowdoin Women's Association, learned about the duo as part of an honors project she was doing on sex education. The team presented a general educational program, "Sex Discussed Here," which focused on, according to Bowdoin Women's Association co-chair Alison Driver '08, "The nuts and bolts of how sex works and how it can work better." The presentation attracted over 150 students and was an enormous success. "The energy in the room was so positive, and everyone on their way out was smiling and talking about how much they enjoyed the program," said Day. "Everyone left more informed, certainly, but also more empowered." Encouraged by the success of the couple's previous presentation, Karin Clough, former director of the Women's Resource Center, campaigned to bring the couple back to Bowdoin in 2006. The Women's Resource Center, which is sponsoring the event in conjunction with the Bowdoin Women's Association, hopes that this year's presentation of "The Female Orgasm" will contribute to its mission of improving reproductive health and general sexual knowledge. "If you're going to take the risks [of having sex], you should also get some of the pleasures," Driver said. By sponsoring a program focused primarily on sexual pleasure, a topic often neglected in sexual education, the organizations hope not only to remedy this problem, but also to promote healthy sexual relationships. "If you're not being respected, you're not in a good situation," Driver said, "and you're probably not having an orgasm." |

tyranny of the female orgasm Yes, yes — well, no. Germaine Greer, who’s in a film about vibrators, cuts the Big O down to size. Female orgasms wander through the news media like the Loch Ness monster, glimpsed now and then, but never quite surfacing. Now we have two more sightings, thanks to the latest book by Fay Weldon and a new film about the Rabbit vibrator. In What Makes Women Happy? Weldon recommends that a good woman should fake her orgasms “and then leap out of bed and pour him champagne, telling him: ‘You are so clever’. ” Meanwhile, the new film, Rabbit Fever (in which I make a cameo appearance), launches next week, purporting to tell the story of the sex toy’s rise and its tendency to create orgasm addicts. What is it about the female orgasm nowadays? The O-word itself is horrid and its meaning is confused; the root is the Greek word for tumescence or engorgement, not for the spasm that invariably accompanies ejaculation in the male, of which something similar can be produced in the female, but less reliably and with rather more effort. Candles and carrots used to be credited with more potency in triggering female orgasm than the male member but the march of technology has produced a purpose-made pleasure-tool, namely the vibrator, of which the market leader is the Rabbit. For a mere £30, any woman can acquire a “good-sized Rabbit vibrator with an extra: the beads can move up and down for pure pleasure whilst the rabbit is teasing your cl*t”, according to the advert. The rabbit is a two-eared projection on the upper side of the shaft of the instrument. And there’s more: “The shaft has a number of pleasure beads and the touch control allows you to choose between vibrate, pulse, escalate or multi-speed”, all accompanied by the kind of droning buzz you associate with a cordless hedge-clipper. You can get silent Rabbits, but they cost more and they’re more of the squirmy type. Eventually men will have penile inserts that give them a similar range of extras, vibrating eggs in the penis head, jelly spikes, rotating beads. But a man takes more looking after than a Rabbit and today’s women don’t have the time. In modern consumer society the name of the game is instant gratification and the paradigm of all pleasure is solitary. Sole users guarantee the widest volume of sales of any appliances, hence the iPod and the Rabbit. Apparently Fay Weldon did not watch Sex and the City, which is what launched the Rabbit into every boudoir in the Western world. Women no longer expect men to supply orgasms, if they ever did. It’s only the men who expect to supply orgasms; their penis gives them so much pleasure that they can’t imagine it not doing the same for their sexual partner. Most of us do fake orgasm, often, but we could do without Weldon betraying our little secret. In every porn video the whores are whimpering, snorting and panting from the git-go, at the merest touch in vaguely the right area from a even the rubberiest of male organs. Faking it is de rigueur. Most women do it because given their workload they need to get the sex over with in the nicest way and get some sleep. It’s called “keeping everyone (but yourself) happy”. That principle is a chief mechanism in women’s oppression and I am saddened but not surprised to hear Weldon upholding it. If you’re Paris Hilton — hugely rich, entirely self-willed and don’t give a damn whether the people around you are happy or not — you can skip the whole performance. In a porn video made by some hustler when Hilton was only 18, he crouches head-down between her thighs, snuffling like a trufflehound, while she lies back, staring expressionlessly at the ceiling. The sequence lasts about 20 minutes. I almost expected her to ask the famous question from Deep Throat: “Do you mind if I smoke while you eat?” But she remains mute and motionless throughout. She could be asleep. Attagirl. The rest of us wouldn’t dare to be so disobliging. We moan and groan to make our man feel good, much as a man will tell his date that she’s the prettiest girl in the room. It’s just good manners. And as for telling him how clever he is after sex and pouring him a rewarding glass of champagne, it’s hard to do that if he’s flat on his back snoring. Most of us are too insecure to be upfront about our failure to respond. Weldon is wrong: men are not expected to supply women’s orgasms. These days women are expected to produce orgasms on demand. Regardless of age or fitness or the tedium of the relationship, we’re all supposed to be hot, up for it, in all circumstances, at all times. The insertion of the penis is tantamount to lighting the blue touchpaper. If we don’t go off like a fire-cracker, it’s not the man’s fault but ours. The most potent cause of so much faking it is fear of appearing frigid, of being a “dud bash”. Mid-20th-century marriage manuals encouraged men to be patient, to stimulate their partners in a host of different ways, and to delay their own gratification as long as possible. The woman was to be the violin; the man the virtuoso. With a man who knew what he was doing, a woman could experience multiple orgasms, remaining in an orgastic state for many minutes. Alas, the multiple orgasm has proved even more elusive than the mutual orgasm. Sexualities have many forms of expression and those forms are continually changing. From 1927, when Wilhelm Reich first published The Function of the Orgasm, orgasms have been represented as essential to mental health. In the beginning these weren’t just any orgasms; the essential orgasms were those that eliminated tensions, leaving the individual in a state of equilibrium, self-regulating and therefore capable of freedom. Oppressive political systems, it was claimed, induced mindless servility and impotence by censoring free sexual expression. Unfulfilled subjects sublimated their frustrations in militarism, racism and genocide. If Hitler had had the right orgasms the Holocaust would never have happened. “Right sex” was a purifying ritual; masturbation was discouraged. For women, the right orgasm was vaginal; orgasms deriving from stimulation of the clitoris were thought to be superficial, inferior, typical of the narcissistic immature personality. Better understanding of female anatomy brought the awareness that there were few nerve ends in the vagina, despite the myth of the G-spot. Proper study of the ramifications of the clitoris revealed that it was not so much a localised button as the outcropping head of a deep neural network involving the whole pelvis, including the vagina. The truth was out: women did not need men’s help to reach orgasm. Indeed, men could get in the way. The more they fiddled and twiddled, the more in the way they were. Fay Weldon is probably right to say that sex without orgasm can be perfectly pleasurable, but making love is even more deeply satisfying than simply having sex, with the female orgasm as an optional extra. Weldon is certainly right to say that there is no point in a woman demanding an orgasm from her man. If an orgasm is what she wants, rather than intimacy, there’s always the Rabbit. What Makes Women Happy? (Fourth Estate, £12.99) is available from Times Books First at £11.99 (p&p free). Rabbit Fever is in cinemas from September 22 |

Daily Californian – Mar 6, 2001 Tuesday, March 6, 2001
Q:My buddies and I were watching some porn and we saw a woman who was squirting fluid out of what looked like her urethra. It didn’t look like urine, so I was wondering what it was?
A: What you have witnessed is the blessed event of female ejaculation. Though it is a rare event among most women, it has been praised for centuries. Hippocrates, the father of medicine himself, wrote that if a woman felt an orgasm she would ejaculate with the man.
In modern times, female ejaculation has made for a great niche in the porn industry. My first exposure to it came from Carol Queen’s video “Great Vibrations.” At first, I too was shocked and confused by the liquids shooting out from her vagina. People have long believed that a woman’s ejaculate was just urine from a leaky bladder, a concept that seemed to gross out a lot of women and their partners who may have experienced it for themselves.
Sure the ejaculate does squirt out from the urethra, the same opening from which urine is expelled. Sure, sometimes it smells a little like urine. And sure, sometimes women feel like they are about to pee right before they ejaculate.
Studies have been conducted over the years to discover what those fluids are. Scientists gave women a pill that turns their urine bright blue. These “ejaculation-inclined” women then produced the curious fluids, and they did not come out blue. Based on these results, it is pretty safe to say that female jizz is not the same as the urine that comes from the bladder.
What probably does produce the female ejaculate is a gland called the Skene’s gland. The Skene’s gland surrounds the urethral area and lies just above the urethral sponge. This gland is similar to the prostate gland found in men, which may be why the substance of female ejaculate closely resembles male ejaculate.
Along the front-side or ceiling of the vagina runs the urinary tube leading to the urethral sponge. This area has intense nerve endings and when stimulated, may produce a unique orgasmic sensation. When continuously stimulated, the sponge fills with fluids from the Skene’s and other glands and may squirt out as an ejaculation.
The area around the urethral sponge is more commonly known as the G-spot. Named after Dr. Ernest Grafenberg, this idolized spot is thought to be a secret button that, if pushed, will make a woman magically orgasm and melt in her partner’s arms. It’s not quite so miraculous and may not even stimulate that much pleasure for some women.
In case you are curious and would like to find your G-spot, here are some suggestions to try. The G-spot may be dime-sized or larger and feel bumpy and ridged. It can also swell a bit when a woman is aroused. One of the best ways for your partner to help you find it is to face you, then put one or two fingers into your vagina and make a come hither motion.
The G-spot is typically about one to three inches into the vagina and may move slightly during arousal. Massaging the area in a circular motion or tapping it lightly may excite it.
When stimulated, many women say they begin to feel like they need to pee. That’s a normal aspect of G-spot stimulation. You can urinate before any sexual play to make sure that you don’t actually urinate during arousal. While stimulation of the area can feel pleasurable and bring women to orgasm, it might not lead to an orgasm and it could prove to be uncomfortable. It’s not everyone’s piece of pie.
Since most people don’t have amazingly stretchable fingers to reach around in the vagina, you might want to try other types of penetration. When using a strap-on or with penile penetration, try it doggy-style-this seems to be the best way during sex to stimulate the G-spot.
If doggy-style isn’t your thing, any rear entry into the vagina should do the trick. While the female is standing, her penetrating partner can insert the penis or dildo from behind. Or the woman can sit on her partner’s lap. A woman can also raise her legs up and expose her derriere while her partner kneels and inserts the penis or dildo from that angle.
Using vibrators and dildos requires less work on the partner’s part and allows a woman to explore her very own G-spot. Curved attachments are now sold to help reach the ceiling of the vagina.
Men also have “G-spots.” The prostate gland is considered the male equivalent to the female G-spot since powerful sensations can result from prostate stimulation. Located at the front-side of the rectum, a couple inches in, you can check out last week’s column for hints on how to provide good anal penetration stimulation (”Rip or Rim?” Feb. 27).
To those women who can ejaculate, good for you! Don’t be embarrassed that you appeared to have peed in bed. Enjoy the sensations for what they are-fantastic and sensuous. Try not to allow yourself to be caught up in the belief that you are supposed to be all clean and tidy during sex, because that’s just not going to happen.
To those who haven’t or can’t seem to cum, don’t worry-not everyone can and that’s OK. But don’t be afraid to explore your G-spot region or attempt to reach female ejaculation.
You can check out these videos available to purchase or rent online or at Good Vibrations-”How To Female Ejaculate” by Fanny Fatale and “The Incredible G-spot” by Laura Corn. Videos offer a more hands-on approach for you and your partner and some helpful hints.
Whether you can or cannot reach ejaculation, G-spot orgasm, or any orgasm for that matter, savor the luscious feelings of sexual exploration. Making ejaculation or orgasm a goal shouldn’t be what drives you to a sexual experience, because that might prevent you from ever getting there. Just lay back and enjoy the ride.
Until then, you can come see me tonight on the seventh floor of Eshleman Hall at 7 p.m. And you can even buy me, for the right price. All proceeds will go to a women’s shelter and earthquake relief to India and El Salvador.
If the girl in your arms is sounding a Defcon 5, don’t be alarmed.
